The Vision and Mission

Our vision is to promote empathy and education, with both you can end wars, end corruption and end inequality.
We want teenagers in Malawi and Mozambique to get a chance to go to university – enabled by technology and crowdfunding.

What KUMU does

Traveling through Africa, specifically Malawi, KUMU founders Johanna and Klaus noticed the lack of higher education thousands and thousands of teenagers are facing: These highly talented, smart and curious kids are unable to go to college because it’s just too expensive and therefore limited to a fraction of the population – to those that make much more than just a dollar day. With the average cost of 300 US dollars per year for accommodation, food and education at universities in Malawi and other countries in Africa, the vast majority of families and kids are unable to
afford it as the average annual income in Malawi is between 100 and 200 US dollars per year. 300 US dollars per year in developed countries, especially if split among a few people, is not much but can give kids a bright future – through education.
Our goal is to enable kids to go to college, to receive a degree, to go back to their villages, teach others. KUMU’s goal is to help them help each other, bring knowledge back to the villages, become entrepreneurs, teachers, doctors – whatever they strive to be best in.

How we help

Our platform allows kids in Africa to get sponsorships from those who want to help and mentor them throughout their educational journey. After the initial application of both, the donors and students, KUMU’s goal is to match them based on interests, education and professional career goals. Via the app people are able to donate to cover the students’ education, accommodation and food.

Academy and Community

The minute a KUMU funded student starts university, she/he will be automatically moved into the KUMU.academy path – a community that strives to support each other, promotes education and gives back to those that also want to attend college.
It’s built around a mentor program that not only includes those that have undergone the KUMU path but also those that have given, have pledged and have crowdfunded the young students.
